How Dumpster Weight Limits Affect Your Final Rental Cost

For the full limits by size, see our detailed weight limits page. This post covers only what it costs when a load goes over.

Going overweight is the most common reason a rental costs more than booked. Here is the math, with real examples.

The Math, in Plain Numbers

Our prices include delivery, pickup, 7 days and 1 ton of disposal. Over that included 1 ton, overage is $55 per ton over — the tons over, multiplied by $55.

Three Worked Examples

  • A 20-yard remodel load at 2.5 tons: 2.5 minus the included 1 ton = 1.5 tons over. 1.5 × $55 = $82.50 extra, on top of the 20-yard starting price of $400.
  • A shingle tear-off at 3 tons: 3 minus 1 = 2 tons over. 2 × $55 = $110 extra. Shingles are dense, so roof loads run heavy.
  • A light household cleanout at 0.7 tons: furniture, boxes and bagged junk stay under the included 1 ton, so overage is $0.

How the Weight Is Determined

You do not weigh anything yourself. The loaded container is weighed at the disposal facility, and the landfill scale ticket is the record we go by. That weight, minus the included 1 ton, is what overage is based on.

How to Avoid an Overage Charge

  1. Pick the right size, and tell us what you are disposing of when you book — especially shingles, concrete or tile.
  2. Use a dedicated container for concrete or dirt instead of mixing heavy material into a general load.
  3. Do not load wet debris. Rain-soaked wood and drywall weigh more, so cover the container with a tarp when not loading — Asheville rain adds up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I go over the weight limit?
You are billed $55 per ton over the included 1 ton, based on the landfill scale ticket. For example, 1.5 tons over is $82.50 extra.

Is the weight limit the same for every dumpster size?
Our rentals include 1 ton of disposal; overage is $55 per ton over that. For full limits by size, see our weight limits page.

Should I weigh my debris myself before pickup?
Not necessary — the hauler weighs the loaded container at the disposal facility. Just describe your project accurately when booking.
